When you think of video games, what comes up in your mind? Combat? Or competition? What comes up in my mind is stories. Many video games are popular mainly because of their stories and the fantastic timeline that connects everything. When many games with engaging stories are presented, books would have written about it to better present the story about the video games and give the readers a better view of the game and story. Now, video games have become a piece of art that gives immersion stronger than any other form of entertainment. If you are a fan of books based on games and would rather have some to try, here is the list based on games recommended either because of their story, gameplay, or both.
1. Best Book Based on Video Game – Assassin’s Creed
The Assassin’s Creed book series written by Oliver Bowden is dominating the market due to its game. The game doesn’t actually come from the book, but it is still a very popular game series. Readers are buying the Assassin’s Creed book series to continue their adventures. There are books for each key game in the series, and they are available in either printed form, electronic form, or audio form.
The game of Assassin’s Creed can’t get any more exciting and epic. Many factors of this game are well made and presented. Players love the combat and the different skills they can use while combating. Other than the combat system, the storyline of this game is flawless too. 2. Best Book Based on Video Game – BioShock
Ayn Rand’s works heavily inspire the BioShock games. The best example would be the book Atlas Shrugged. In the BioShock books, John Shirley provides a more detailed and intense world than those in the games. However, this does not mean that the BioShock games are not worth trying.
The FPS game developed by Ken Levine has a well-developed weapon system, which allows players to collect new weapons to better deal with the enemies they will face. The game is well made. The book series BioShock is also very exciting. If you are finding a book based on a first-person shooting game, then BioShock will be the game for you.
3. Best Book Based on Video Game – Borderlands
When the first Borderland game was released, it surprised the players by having Diablo elements with a shooter perspective with wicked humor and cartoon-like graphics. The second game of Borderlands brought the players to the next level and have more fun and adventure.
While waiting for Borderland III, why not read the Borderland book series written by John Shirley and get a little deeper into the story of Borderland. The book series that John Shirley writes did a fantastic job presenting the details of the main characters and their own story. So while waiting for Borderland III, consider trying with the Borderland books and let John Shirley guide you into a more profound and more interesting Borderland world.
4. Best Book Based on Video Game – Crysis
Welcome our first science fiction on our list. Even though there is very little hope for Crysis IV, the two scientific fiction Crysis book is relatively enjoyable and a great choice to read. The two books, Crysis: Legion and Crysis: Escalation is written by Peter Watts and covered a different part of the game. Crysis: Legion covers all of the second game of Crysis and presents to the readers more details you might not know in the game. Crysis: Escalation, instead of getting over a whole game event, sets up multiple short stories that fill the gap in the second Crysis game and the third Crysis game.
And Crysis is classified as a first-person shooter game, but there is a LOT of bow and arrow usage in the game itself, given how powerful the Predator Bow is. The story and combat in this game are lovely, and the different weapon and weapon usage are well made. The lead character inspires the main character in this game in District 9, and Crysis III is much more open than the previous two games. So if you are a fan of novel-based sci-fi video games, Crysis games, and Crysis books would be an excellent choice for you.
5. Best Book Based on Video Game – Darksiders
Since the Darksiders 3 is slowly having its comeback prepared, reading its book is a great choice if you still want to get deeper into the game. The book of Darksiders is about the adventure of the first horseman. The Abomination Vault will provide you the first and second game events and bring you a better understanding of either the game or the story itself.
Created by Vigil Games, Darksiders is a slash and hack action-adventure game about the story of Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. From a third-person perspective, the players playing this game will control one of the Four Horsemen. Each horseman has different weapons and attacking styles. There’s an open world in the game that allows players to explore. Additionally, there are many puzzles and mysteries for the players to solve, mostly giving the players dead souls. Souls of the dead allow players to buy and upgrade various items that will make their life easier. Overall, this action-adventure game with the book is also an excellent choice for you if you are interested.
6. Popular Novel Based on Video Game – Dead Space
Even though the studio responsible for the Dead Space game is long gone, the novel Dead Space written by Brian K. Evenson still exists and gives the readers an intense feeling. Dead Space’s book provides the readers with the events before the game, I mean the first game. The terror and intensiveness that dwell in the book still give out to the readers. If you are a fan of horror games and would instead read a horror Book Based on Video games, then Dead Space is the game for you.
The game Dead Space was first presented in 2008, and it is a survival horror game. In the game, the players will be controlling the engineer Issac Clarke and navigate the spaceship. Of course, as usual, the mission won’t be so easy. On the way, the players have to fight and deal with Necromorphs while struggling to grow psychosis. While the players are going through areas and solving puzzles, the story of this game follows the progress.
7. Popular Novel Based on Video Game – Resident Evil
The Resident Evil series is so far intense and exciting. Unfortunately, Resident Evil VII comes in, and it stopped. If you are one of the many players that had been through the Resident Evil games and stared right into the eye of horror and amazingly survived, guess what, the Resident Evil books are here for you to read. The book Resident Evil brings the reader a brand new better understanding of the Resident Evil games and their story. For survivors that had been through the games already, consider reading the Resident Evil books. No matter for better or for worse, at least there are more action-directed.
As many of you may know, the Resident Evil games are also known as Biohazard and are created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara. It’s a third-person survival shooter game in which the players are supposed to survive in a zombie-full world and deal with those nasty walking dead. Pretty decent novel-based game and you will surely like the game and the book too.
The story of Halo can’t get any more epic, and the Halo books retell the story and bringing it to another level of excitement. Halo has 13 novels, and the readers will start with Halo: The Fall of Reach, then slowly fall into it in Halo: Cryptum, at last, completely lose themselves with Halo: Broken Circle. Halo(Games Like Halo): The Fall of Reach provides the readers a more detailed look at the beginning of the SPARTAN program, which will give the readers a better understanding of the game. If you are a fan of the Halo series, the Halo books, for a better understanding, will be a great choice.
9. Dragon Age
The books of Dragon age are quite split out for the writers. Thanks to David Gaider, the first three Books Based on Video games are incredible pieces of art. After that, Patrick Weekes wrote the fourth Dragon Age novel, which is also excellent. Meanwhile, Liane Merciel wrote the fifth one, which is the final Dragon Age novel. They are all good even though written by different authors.
Now, let’s get deeper into the Dragon Age game (not novel). Dragon Age is a fantasy role-playing game that BioWare develops. In Dragon Age: Origin tells the story about warriors known as Grey Wardens trying to save the kingdom of Ferelden from Darkspawn. Dragon Age II is more concentrated around the story of the eldest child of the Hawke Family. The third game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, centers on the Inquisition, an organization tasked to bring peace and order to Thedas. All three games have slightly different things to focus on, but they are all well made and brought players fantastic gaming experiences. While waiting for Dragon Age IV, as always, read the Dragon Age novels based on video games to give you a deeper understanding of the story and the game.
10. Mass Effect
Last but not least, Mass Effect. Mass Effect’s science fiction universe is impossible to fit into just a few video games. So that’s why the book series of Mass Effect was written. The book of Mass Effect fleshes out the storyline and gives the reader a much deeper insight into the original game. The stories about the life of young David Anderson are a must for every fan of Mass Effect. This novel based on video games will not disappoint you.
The combination of books and video games will indeed become more popular over time. The games can better present the story of the books, while the novels based on video games give the reader/player a deeper understanding of what’s happening in the game or book. These ten books might not be all well-known, but I will recommend them as the ten best books based on video games.
